What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants and answer engines—ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews—can extract and quote it directly as the answer to a question.
How do answer engines choose what to quote?
Answer engines do not show a page; they show a passage. A question is retrieved against an index, candidate pages are split into passages, and the clearest, most self-contained passages are used to compose the answer. A page wins when one of its passages answers the question on its own.
For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google states there are no additional requirements beyond normal Search: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. That makes classic technical SEO the foundation of AEO.
How do you optimize a page for answer engines?
- Answer first: put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, then the evidence.
- Use question headings that match how people ask—“What is…”, “How do I…”, “Which…”.
- Make every section self-contained so it still makes sense when it is lifted out alone.
- Use real HTML structure: headings, lists and tables, not styled boxes.
- Keep key content in the server-rendered HTML; many crawlers do not run JavaScript.
- Add statistics, quotations and sources. In the GEO study (KDD 2024), these methods increased visibility in generative answers by up to 40%.
- Keep structured data consistent with the visible text—Google requires markup to match the page.
- Show a visible “last updated” date and keep facts current.
Which AEO tactics do not work?
- Special “AI schema”: Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI features.
- llms.txt as a ranking lever: an Ahrefs analysis reported that 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. It is harmless, not a strategy.
- Keyword stuffing: engines extract meaning from passages; repetition makes passages less quotable, not more.
- Hidden content: text that is not visible to users cannot be relied on and conflicts with Google’s guidelines.
How do you measure AEO?
Track a fixed set of prompts your buyers actually ask, run them across engines on a schedule and record whether your page is cited or quoted. Google reports AI Overview and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Search Console performance report under the “Web” search type.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO competes for a position in a list of links; AEO competes to be the passage an assistant quotes. AEO builds on SEO, because a page must be indexed before it can be quoted.
Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?
Not required. Structured data can help engines understand a page, but Google states no special schema is needed for AI features and that markup must match the visible content.
How long does AEO take to work?
Changes appear only after engines recrawl and re-index the page. Google notes recrawling can take days to months; submitting updated URLs through IndexNow and Search Console speeds up discovery.
